What Vaccines Does My Dog or Cat Need?

The vaccines your pet will need will depend on their species, age, lifestyle, and other situational factors, including any known health conditions. Some vaccinations are strongly recommended, some are optional, and some are required by state law.

In North Carolina, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies before they become four months of age. Dogs, cats, and ferrets must also receive boosters every twelve months, meaning they need to be revaccinated against rabies annually. (A rabies vaccination dose that lasts three years, with a slightly different initial booster schedule, may also be available.) This vaccine is not optional, and for good reason: Rabies is a fatal disease to dogs, cats, and ferrets, and there is no cure. Prevention is the only treatment.

All dogs should receive the core “DAPP” vaccine, while all cats should get the feline distemper shot. Both of these combination vaccines protect against multiple diseases. For dogs, the DAPP vaccine protects against the canine parvovirus, the canine distemper virus, the canine parainfluenza virus, and the canine adenovirus types 1 and 2. For cats, the feline distemper shot protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis (also known as feline herpes), feline panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper), and the calicivirus leukemia virus.

When Should I Get My Pet Vaccinated?

You should generally begin vaccinating your young puppy or kitten when they are between six and eight weeks of age. The typical vaccination schedule will last until your puppy or kitten is sixteen weeks of age. To keep their immunity strong (and to comply with state laws), your pet will likely need boosters annually or every three years. As part of your pet’s regular physical checkups, we will continue to monitor them for potential health concerns and make adjustments to their vaccination plan, especially as your dog or cat gets older.

If you have adopted an older dog, cat, or small mammal and are unsure of their vaccination status, we encourage you to reach out to your office right away. We can determine the vaccination your adult pet needs to stay protected.

Does My Pet Bird Need Vaccines?

Many birds kept as pets do not require vaccinations. In some cases, it may be prudent to explore the polyomavirus vaccine for parrots, which should generally be administered starting when the bird is 21 days of age.

My 8 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago. Her quality of life was waning and she would not eat. I contacted the people at Quakertown veterinary clinic and she was accepted into a trial. She was looked at tested and then treated. We had to go once every two weeks and she was monitored at all hours. Within a week her diabetes was under control from the treatment. blood sugar of 500+ down to normal. They really came through big time. Above all else was the way they treated me as a pet parent. All my questions were answered and I was comforted by the nurses and drs always. They have earned my thanks and admiration for what they do. The animals come first, and the humans a close 2nd. Every single time I go there I feel as though Calypso is in great hands. I could not recommend them higher!!
Our cat was developing serious effects from his colon cancer and our normal veterinarian couldn't see him. Quakertown Veterinary Clinic took us within a hour or so with a caring and compassionate experience that we needed in order to end his abruptsuffering. We thank them for their understanding and care.
Our family is very grateful for the care that the entire team gave us, the care is incredible, they deserve like 10 stars, we went because unfortunately our beloved 14 year old family dog Doki began to suffer from heart failure congestion due to age, and we had to put him to sleep 💔, it was a very painful decision, the treatment we received was quite good, kind and compassionate, my family is very grateful, when we picked up the ashes they gave them to me in such a beautiful urn and their paw prints were so precious in such a sad time for me and our family, how delicate you are, we also received a condolence card, we are very grateful, may God bless you all, thank you for making this process so special. 🙏🏼❤️‍🩹
I was glad to find that I could get an appointment for an ultrasound for my cat within 2 weeks of my request. The ultrasound doctor was thorough with her explanations, and took the time to listen to what I had to share about my cat’s symptoms. Even though there were no emergent findings, she made sure to communicate her assessment with my regular vet, who then called me the next day to review our plan. I appreciated the coordination between the doctors.
